The GPO is open every day of the year. However, sub-post offices are closed every Sunday and the following holidays of the year 2000 :
17 & 20 March; 20 & 21 April; 18 May; 15 June; 15 August; 2, 7 & 26 October;
11 November; 25 & 28 December.

When sending parcels from India, it is necessary to have the parcel professionally wrapped. Believe me, it is well worth the moderate expense as the experts know well what they are doing and make an excellent job of it.

METHOD :
1. If delicate, the goods are first packed in a cardboard box.
2. They are then wrapped in polythene.
3. Next, they are wrapped in cloth which well stitched up and sealed with wax.
4. Lastly, a customs clearance form and an address label are pasted on. The details on the form are completed by the expert.

The parcel should not weigh over 20kg and should not be over 180cms in girth.
A parcel the size of a shoe box costs approx. Rs.50 to be professionally wrapped.

POSTAL TIPS

	You are advised to send your parcel from the GPO rather than a sub-post office.
	Insure your parcel (the wrapping service or the PO counter clerk should be able to advise you about this).
	Parcels can ONLY be posted Mon - Fri 10:00 to 16:00 and Sat 10:00 to 13:00.
	DO NOT post letters in just any post box. Many of them are for local post only and your letters may go missing for months (or worse). NONE of the various boxes outside the GPO are for airmail. If in doubt, have your letters franked at the counter.
	A variable quality of service & mis-information are normal, so double-check vital information.
	Be prepared to use a sharp tongue or even sharper elbows to maintain your place in the so-called queue.
